Women in the Iliad often seem to be possessions to be passed around, damsels in distress waiting to be rescued, or victims of war fearing a fate that they cannot control. In the Odyssey, though female characters are slightly more prominent, many of them serve as little more than markers on Odysseus’ journey or objectives for him to reach. In narrative terms, they are static and without agency – they are negative space around male heroes.
In this performance, which blends adapted readings from Homer with new writing, we lift some of these women out of negative space and into the limelight, taking them away from male-centred narratives and encouraging them to speak for themselves. Some remain tangled in the poetry that brought them to life, while others find new words to explore their fear, anger, pain, and power. Join us as we allow these static figures room to embark on their own journeys, and hear the voices of Homer’s women without the clamour of war and homecoming.
Written and performed by SJ Brady, Sinead Costelloe, Wendy Haines, and Christine Plastow.
7pm, Room 106 Gordon House, UCL.
The performance will be followed by a reception and Q&A.
