We’re happy to be taking part in a special one-off event as part of the 2018 Being Human Festival of the Humanities!

Organised by the Institute of Classical Studies, Weaving Women’s Stories is a series of three events exploring the connections between storytelling and textile-making in women’s lives from ancient Greece to modern London. On Friday 16th November at St Margaret’s House in Bethnal Green, By Jove will host a performance of poetry and spoken word from two of our resident writers, SJ Brady and Wendy Haines, and a new collaborator, poet and Classicist Emily Chow-Kambitsch. The work will explore characters from Greek mythology who are particularly associated with weaving, such as Penelope, Helen, and Arachne, through the voices of modern women writers. The performance will be introduced by short talks from experts on ancient craft. After the performance, you can join the experts and writers for informal discussion, have a drink at the bar, or try your hand at weaving on a replica ancient loom.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. The event is free, but booking is required. Click here for more details and to book.

And if you can’t get enough of ancient textiles, you can return the following day, Saturday 17th November, for two activity sessions that will give you the opportunity to try spinning fleece into yarn, weaving on the loom, making replica artefacts from clay and cloth, or even weaving your own ‘story’ with award-winning textile artist Majeda Clarke.
